7 - The Great 5 Boros Bike Tour
New York City, 29,000 cyclists,
42 miles. The largest cycling event in America will celebrate
its 23rd anniversary. Beginning in Manhattan, cyclists travel
traffic free highways, streets, and bridges through the skyscraper
canyons, Central Park, Harlem, Third Avenue Bridge into the Bronx,
onto the FDR Drive, Queensboro Bridge into Queens and along Brooklyn's
waterfront. The tour crosses New York Harbor via the Verrazano
Narrows Bridge to Staten Island. The ride concludes with a festival
of music, food, and exhibitions in Gateway National Recreation
Area. Mayor Rudy Giuliani regularly attends the start line ceremonies.
Benefiting...Proceeds benefit the New York
City Traffic Safety Foundation and Hostelling International,
an organization devoted to promoting a better understanding of
people and the world through hostelling. There are 5 rest stops
long the route providing riders with bike repair, first aid,
comfort stations rider reunion centers, and nutritious snacks
and water.Sponsorship... Organizers offer vendors exclusivity
in product category. Riders are "receptive to product sampling
demonstrations, and other on-site promotions by sponsors who
have access to participants at rest stops.

Frederick MD to DC's Mall, 3000
walkers and crew, 60 miles. A 3 day walk by
Palotta Team Works,same folks that put on the AIDS Ride series.There
are numerous, opportunities to volunteer at the beginning or
end. 500 crew positions to fill.Some of us may volunteer for
the closing ceremonies.
